The NM Peace Choir began as the vision of Founder Christy Conduff, to form an inclusive choir that would inspire peace and joy and help raise social awareness. Christy was the visionary and artistic force behind the New Mexico Peace Choir from 2015 until her retirement in 2019. We are forever grateful to her for this choir she lovingly grew from a dream into a movement.
In December 2019, we welcomed Stephen Lewis as our new Artistic Director. We began 2020 with high hopes for an amazing season with our new director, but when the Covid-19 pandemic hit, choir singing was deemed a "super spreader" activity and all rehearsals ceased. The NMPC quickly pivoted to virtual rehearsals, or "Zoomhearsals", and we continued meeting weekly. We produced several virtual choir videos and eventually held a livestream concert in September 2021. We were thrilled to return to in-person concerts in 2022 and are proud to have maintained our momentum through the pandemic and into post-pandemic times thanks to the leadership of Stephen Lewis, as well as the tireless work behind the scenes to keep us going throughout the pandemic.
During his tenure as our artistic director, Stephen Lewis transitioned from single guy to husband, and became a father in October 2021. In November of 2022, Stephen announced that he and his wife and son would be moving to Minnesota in order to be closer to family. While we were incredibly sad to see him go, we wish Stephen and his sweet family all the best in their new (much colder) home, and sent them off with green chile and lots of love.
In December 2022, we welcomed our new Artistic Director, David Poole. David brings a wealth of experience and talent to the New Mexico Peace Choir and we are excited to see where this next chapter takes us! Welcome, David!
History of NMPC:
Since the beginning, we have experienced tremendous growth and are making a difference in people’s lives. The NMPC has had sell out concerts in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, opened three annual sessions of the NM Legislature, performed for The World Day of Peace, Earth Day, and at various rallies for peace and justice.
We were honored to represent The U.S. at The World Peace Choir Conference in Vienna, Austria and sing with The Vienna Boys Choir and other Peace Choirs from around the world. The choir then performed at The U.S. Embassy in Prague, The Czech Republic and was live streamed to other American Embassies worldwide.
The NMPC was excited to perform the opening ceremonies for The 2017 Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, followed by a center stage concert!
In 2018, we were invited to perform the American debut of the "Great War Symphony" (commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Armistice ending WWI on 11/11/2018) at Carnegie Hall under the direction of the British composer Patrick Hawes.
In December 2018, we opened and performed at the International Relations "Journalism Under Fire" Conference attended by journalists from around the world.
In 2019, The Peace Choir was voted Albuquerque's "Best Chorus" in the Alibi Magazine's "Best of Burque" Readers Poll! Please follow the New Mexico Peace Choir on Facebook and Instagram, and check in with our website to keep up to date with events and concerts.
